As servo technology has evolved-with manufacturers producing smaller, yet better motors -gearheads are becoming increasingly essential companions in motion control. Locating the ideal pairing must consider many engineering considerations.
• A servo engine running at low rpm operates inefficiently. Eddy currents are loops of electrical current that are induced within the electric motor during operation. The eddy currents actually produce a drag push within the engine and will have a larger negative impact on motor functionality at lower rpms.
• An off-the-shelf motor’s parameters may not be ideally suited to run at a minimal rpm. When an application runs the aforementioned engine at 50 rpm, essentially it isn’t using all of its obtainable rpm. As the voltage continuous (V/Krpm) of the engine is set for an increased rpm, the torque constant (Nm/amp)-which is directly linked to it-is lower than it needs to be. Consequently, the application needs more current to operate a vehicle it than if the application had a motor specifically made for 50 rpm. A gearhead’s ratio reduces the engine rpm, which explains why gearheads are occasionally called gear reducers. Utilizing a gearhead with a 40:1 ratio,
the electric motor rpm at the input of the gearhead will be 2,000 rpm and the rpm at the output of the gearhead will be 50 rpm. Operating the motor at the bigger rpm will allow you to avoid the concerns
Servo Gearboxes provide freedom for just how much rotation is achieved from a servo. Many hobby servos are limited to just beyond 180 examples of rotation. Many of the Servo Gearboxes use a patented exterior potentiometer to ensure that the rotation quantity is independent of the gear ratio installed on the Servo Gearbox. In such case, the small gear on the servo will rotate as much times as essential to drive the potentiometer (and hence the gearbox result shaft) into the placement that the transmission from the servo controller calls for.
Machine designers are increasingly turning to gearheads to take advantage of the latest advances in servo engine technology. Essentially, a gearhead converts high-quickness, low-torque energy into low-speed, high-torque result. A servo engine provides highly accurate positioning of its output shaft. When both of these devices are paired with one another, they enhance each other’s strengths, providing controlled motion that is precise, robust, and reliable.
Servo Gearboxes are robust! While there are high torque servos out there that doesn’t mean they can compare to the strain capability of a Servo Gearbox. The tiny splined output shaft of a regular servo isn’t long enough, large enough or supported well enough to take care of some loads even though the torque numbers appear to be suitable for the application. A servo gearbox isolates the load to the gearbox output shaft which is supported by a pair of ABEC-5 precision ball bearings. The external shaft can withstand intense loads in the axial and radial directions without transferring those forces on to the servo. Subsequently, the servo operates more freely and is able to transfer more torque to the output shaft of the gearbox.
